Pancake Draft for Cube: How the Pick-and-Burn Structure Works

Because this is a community format, a playgroup can modify it. The useful baseline is the pick-and-burn sequence, not the idea that every Cube must contain exactly 198 cards. Agree on pack count, burn visibility, and any special collation before starting so neither player has to interpret the procedure during the draft.

What to prepare

For the standard version, shuffle the selected 198-card draft pool and deal 18 face-down packs of 11 cards. Arrange them as nine pairs or keep them in two ordered stacks, provided each round gives both players one fresh pack. The standard Pancake Draft pick-and-burn sequence

Each paired round begins with one 11-card pack in front of each player. Both players complete the same actions simultaneously. The community descriptions from CubeForge and Riptide Lab support the following sequence.

  1. Pick one card from the 11-card pack in front of you. Put it into your draft pool, then exchange the remaining 10-card pack with your opponent.
  2. From the 10-card pack you receive, draft two cards. Choose two additional cards to burn face down. Six cards remain in that pack. Exchange the six-card pack with your opponent.
  3. From the six-card pack returned to you, draft two cards. Burn the remaining four cards face down.
  4. Set the two empty pack positions aside and begin the next paired round with two fresh 11-card packs.

At the end of one paired round, each player has drafted five cards: one initial pick, two picks from the opponent’s starting pack, and two picks after receiving their own starting pack back. Each player has also burned six cards. Across both packs, the round produces 10 drafted cards and 12 burned cards.

The full card math

  • 18 packs × 11 cards = 198 cards used
  • 18 packs arranged in pairs = 9 paired rounds
  • 5 drafted cards per player per round × 9 rounds = 45 cards per player
  • 45 cards per player × 2 players = 90 drafted cards
  • 198 total cards − 90 drafted cards = 108 burned cards

Neither player should be described as seeing all 198 cards. Initial picks are made before the packs change hands, so one player may never see the other player’s first pick. Face-down burns further limit what can be known with certainty.

Building decks after the draft

The straightforward deckbuilding baseline is the familiar Limited model: build a deck containing at least 40 cards and allow players to add any number of basic lands. Wizards describes that baseline for conventional Booster Draft, where players ordinarily draft about 45 cards before deck construction. Pancake Draft itself is not an official format, so Cube owners can establish different construction rules. A 40-card minimum is nevertheless a practical default because a 45-card pool usually leaves room to choose approximately 22 to 24 nonland cards, depending on the deck’s curve, mana sources, and nonbasic lands.

Do not assume every drafted fixing land belongs in the final deck. Count mana sources after deciding the deck’s actual color commitments. A speculative third-color card may have looked attractive during the draft but still weaken the final mana base.

How burning changes the draft

A burn is a card deliberately removed from the draft. It does not enter either player’s pool. Burning face down creates three overlapping decisions: protect your likely deck, deny the opponent a card, and manage uncertainty about what is still available.

Denial competes with self-interest

Suppose you receive a pack containing a flexible removal spell, a narrow graveyard payoff, a premium fixing land, and several replacement-level cards. Your two picks might be easy, but your burns are not. Burning the graveyard payoff can constrain an opponent you suspect is drafting that deck. Burning the fixing land may prevent a splash. Burning a generically powerful card may be safer when your read is weak.

The cost of hate-burning is opportunity. A burn used against a speculative opponent is not available to remove a card that could defeat your own strategy. Early in the draft, flexible threats, fixing, and broad interaction are often safer burn targets than narrow cards whose owner is unclear.

Normal signals become less reliable

In a full pod, a card that returns after circling the table can reveal something about demand. Pancake Draft has only two players, controlled burns, and a short exchange sequence. A card’s disappearance does not tell you whether the opponent drafted it or either player burned it. Conventional signaling and wheeling therefore do not operate in the usual way.

Use broader evidence instead. Repeatedly receiving playable red cards is more informative than noticing that one red card vanished. The opponent’s early fixing may also suggest a direction, but hidden burns prevent complete certainty.

How Pancake Draft changes Cube card evaluation

Pancake Draft does not create a universal ranking of better and worse cards. It changes the probability that support pieces survive and the value of keeping options open. Evaluate a card by asking what happens when key companions can be removed deliberately and invisibly.

Flexible cards gain structural value

Cards that fit several decks help a drafter survive incomplete information. A cheap interaction spell usable by control, tempo, and midrange remains productive even if the intended archetype shifts. Hybrid costs, modal spells, colorless role-players, and broadly useful lands can perform similar work, depending on the Cube’s power level.

These are often the glue cards that hold a Cube draft together. Their value is not merely raw efficiency. They reduce the chance that a player’s early picks become stranded after a crucial payoff or enabler disappears.

Narrow archetypes need redundancy

A synergy deck cannot rely on one irreplaceable payoff when that card can be burned before its drafter sees it. If an archetype needs a specific effect, include multiple cards that perform that role or let those cards overlap with another strategy. The relevant measure is functional density: how many usable versions of the effect are present in the drafted subset.

Fixing controls how recoverable a draft is

Good fixing lets players pivot after hidden burns disrupt an initial plan. Too much fixing creates a different problem: both players may simply select the strongest cards and postpone color commitment. The right density depends on whether the Cube is meant to reward disciplined lanes, multicolor exploration, or high-powered good-stuff decks.

Power outliers become prominent burn decisions

A card far above the surrounding power band may become an automatic first pick or burn. That can make the draft repetitive even when the card rarely reaches a deck. Track cards that are consistently removed on sight. If the same few cards dominate burn decisions, consider whether they are creating useful tension or merely taxing every pack. A 180-card Cube cannot supply the complete 18-by-11 setup. One documented adaptation uses 16 packs of 11, creating eight paired rounds and 40 drafted cards per player. The same five-picks-per-round procedure applies. This is a practical adaptation rather than a universally standardized Twobert rule.

For a larger Cube, randomly sampling 198 cards maximizes variation but can produce uneven archetype support. A curated 198-card module gives the designer more control over color balance, fixing, and synergy density. A middle path is to seed essential infrastructure—such as fixing or archetype enablers—then fill the rest of the pool randomly.

Pancake Draft versus Winston and Grid Draft

Choose the method according to the decisions your two-player group enjoys. Pancake Draft emphasizes repeated pick-and-burn choices and concealed denial. None is inherently the best two-player format. Pancake is a strong candidate when you want substantial card exposure, conventional-looking draft pools, and active decisions about removing cards. Judge the format by patterns across multiple drafts rather than one deck. Hidden burns create variance, and a single unsupported strategy may reflect the particular 198-card sample rather than the full Cube.

  • If decks lack enough playables, reduce narrow cards or increase flexible role-players.
  • If synergy decks never come together, add redundant enablers and payoffs that overlap with other archetypes.
  • If both players default to multicolor piles, reduce fixing or increase rewards for color commitment.
  • If the same cards are always burned, review those power outliers and the answers available to them.
  • If random subsets omit essential support, seed key infrastructure or use a curated draft module.
  • If resetting the Cube is slow, label storage dividers and count drafted and burned cards before returning the pool.

Keep the card list accurate when making physical updates. Record additions, removals, double-faced cards, and required tokens together.
